A statement resonated with me during our monthly in-clinic practitioner training today at Nadura clinics, when speaking about our F.E.B.S (Functional Epigenetic & Biochemical Screen) programme and in particular “Anxiety”
It was simply
Anxiety- taking down another factor!!!
This was when speaking about the link between specific dietary influences and the variations in an individuals biochemistry. Like most forms of imbalance and illness in the body, anxiety has multiple causative factors. Sometimes we lack the focus or time to get appropriate advise and challenge one particular issue, before we move on to correct the next.
One extremely underestimated factor that can often be missed is simply DIET.
Yes, what we put into our mouths can have an impact on triggering anxiety and commonly drives this process with along with other factors. Before our clients biochemistry and genetics are tested, we need to ensure their diet is complimenting their efforts and not hampering it. Certain types of refined sugar and the amounts that we eat can have a direct effect on our mood and particularly for those who are predisposed.
Every client case is individual, but many of our clients are placed on a low carb/higher fat protocol with the aim of reducing nervous system stimulation from refined sugar while giving their brain and synapse a constant feed of high quality fatty acids. The results we see via this dietary pattern through regular lab testing is lower insulin, glucose & hba1c levels and a reduction in levels of CRP (a blood inflammatory factor). Reducing refined carbs/sugar intake to specific levels can not only reduce the amount of stress hormones (cortisol & noradrenaline) that may be released in excess (which in themselves can cause anxiety- we can all relate to being stressed out and feeling that imminent panic?) but it also reduces inflammation. Another major factor implicated in mood disorders. There is increasing evidence to support the role of the microbiom in brain and nervous system function. Refined, sugary foods can have a negative impact on this.
Diet is and always can be a foundational basis for any mood imbalance programme. What you put into your mouth can either be your strongest ally or your greatest foe.
Make small changes and keep moving forward taking down one factor at a time – Anita
